We all have heard big fancy words thrown around on social media, and manier times we don’t understand them exactly. So before we dive into our article, let’s define some terms.
First, PATRIARCHY- a male dominated society where women are largely excluded from it. Women may be restricted to their orthodox roles.
MATRIARCHY - the opposite of patriarchy, a women dominated society, wherein they have the authority to make all major decisions.
MISOGYNY - when society oppresses women and has prejudice against them.
But what exactly is feminism?
It is important to understand that feminism does NOT mean matriarchy. It is rather a belief wherein one believes women, men and all other genders deserve equal opportunities, rights and respect.
Many think feminism equals hating men. Feminism is NOT about destroying men or reversing the pendulum and oppressing them. It is about destroying the patriarchal ideals that are deeply engraved in our society and about stopping the pendulum from oppressing women.
Another common misconception about feminism is that men can’t be feminists. Just like animal right activists aren’t animals, being a feminist is not just for women, but for all who support equality. Male feminists aren’t men against their own gender.
In fact, feminism empowers men too. It supports the idea of men not having to give into the societal pressures of being the fender, the breadwinner and someone with superhuman strength, as much as it advocates that women be allowed to break out of stereotypes.
We must accept that biology has made us all different, but that does not make any gender lesser than the other.
